Do not send the cleanest client you have

Firms try to be polite. They pick a file that already closes itself.

That teaches you nothing. Send a current monthly client that actually needs production: QBO or Xero, a real bank stack, a partner who will review the output. The free test client form exists to qualify that, not to collect a newsletter signup.

If the client is two years behind, that is the wrong test. That file is reconstruction. Use book reconstruction for tax deadlines or unfiled years for tax professionals. Monthly tests assume a current close.

What I tell partners to score

  • Did every account reconcile?
  • Are exceptions flagged, or buried?
  • Is the branding yours, or did a vendor name leak?
  • Can you finish review in about 90 minutes? See how to review a white-label package.
  • Would you send this to the client after your normal review?

Look at sample deliverables first so you know the shape. Then compare the live file to that shape.

What a pass is not

A pass is not "they were nice on the kickoff call." A pass is not a dashboard. A pass is a package you would put in front of a client after partner review.

AICPA hiring-outlook reporting keeps showing firms that need capacity. The test is whether outside delivery gives you that capacity without handing over judgment. For CPA Firms is the model. How it works is the sequence.

After the test

If it holds, add the next current client. If the historical years are still a mess, scope those separately. Catch-up vs monthly is the split. Pricing keeps diagnostic reconstruction and monthly delivery on different tickets.

Accounting Today on making outsourcing work is still the right peer-level read: structure first, volume second.

Start a free test client when you have the file in mind. Or schedule a conversation if you want help picking it.
